Students will be looking at the unique construction and shaping of Faroese shawls. Far from being dainty objects, Faroese shawls are big, warm everyday wear that sit well on shoulders. Traditionally they use a different charting system and pattern writing system which we will go through in class. The students will knit a mini Faroese shawl which will teach them all the techniques they need to know before tackling a full-size project.

Taking cues from psychogeography, a method for exploring everyday landscapes, this workshop asks: what is the fabric of your own everyday life? Together with designer and writer Karie Westermann, you will investigate what knitting means to you and how knitting can be used a creative exploration tool. From fields and mountains to concrete high-rises, Knitting the Landscape is a way to connect with places you’ve been or yearn to visit. This class is suitable for beginner knitters and upwards. Please arm yourself with scraps of yarn, suitable needles, pen/paper and an open mind.

Shetland lace sounds daunting, but this workshop will teach you how to work the basic construction of a traditional Shetland Hap Shawl. Together with Karie Westermann, you will work your way through a small sample shawl which will empower you to tackle bigger, more complex shawls. Karie Westermann will also be talking about the history of Shetland shawl knitting. She'll delve into the dark stories behind the beautiful shawls as you learn about the different stitch patterns, the people who worked them, and the myths we still tell.

Nordic knitting is much more than just reindeers and snowflakes. Traditional Nordic knitting is bold, steeped in history, and shared heritage. Take a trip across the Nordic region with Danish-Scottish knitting designer Karie Westermann and learn about colourful Finnish fishermen's garments, intricate Norwegian mittens, and the Arctic origins of the famous Icelandic yoked sweater, the lopapeysa.

You will be looking at how to go from idea to finished design and how to calculate projects. Karie will guide you through your design process – armed with humour and experience – and give you hands-on advice regarding construction methods, shaping, and how to avoid the most common shawl design mistakes.

From Iceland to the very heart of Russia, Northern Europe has some very distinct lace traditions. Together we will be looking closer at these traditions and how they influence each other. We will look at Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland, Estonia and Orenburg before knitting a sample shawl (Shetland or Estonian) of your choice.

This full day workshop will introduce you to the many, varied knitting traditions of Scandinavia and the Nordic region. Together with Karie, you will explore Icelandic, Faroese, Norwegian and Danish knitting heritage as you knit colourwork 'the Nordic way'. We'll discuss authentic colour choices and regional differences in colourwork among other things. You'll be working a wrist warmer pattern on the day, try two-handed colourwork, troubleshoot your colourwork techniques, and you will also get a chance to look at Karie's gorgeous samples.

Sometimes a little effort is rewarded by great effect. Mock cables, twisted stitches, and Japanese mini-cables all look complex, but are surprisingly easy to work once you learn the secrets. We'll play with textures and techniques as we knit wrist warmers together. With designer and author Karie Westermann at your side, you will learn about how to mimic cables using lace techniques, twisted stitches, and elegant Japanese slipped stitches.
